Insect
causing Allergens
The New England Journal of Medicine found
asthmatic children who were both allergic and frequently
exposed to cockroaches were 3.5 times more likely to
be hospitalized for asthma-related problems than children
who were both allergic but not exposed to cockroaches
on a frequent basis. It was found that in eight cities
in which data was taken that the condition was significantly
greater among the poor inner-city children.
Researchers
concluded, in general, asthmatic children to be much
more reactive to allergens caused by cockroach cast
skins and frass, than to cat dander and dust mites.
Medical professionals emphasized that cockroach control
is relatively inexpensive and could produce significant
benefits.
