Keeping the pests at bay

Ah, spring is here! It’s time to tackle those springtime chores, including pest-proofing your home. It’s important to keep the pests at bay this spring – here’s a few helpful tips to make sure your home in pest-free.

The ants go marching one-by-one….

Most commonly, ants are known to infest kitchen spaces because it provides an easy access to food and water sources. It’s important to clean up spilled liquids or overripe fruit, as ants will be attracted to the sticky residue, especially on the counter tops. We believe you may go through the efforts of keeping your kitchen clean on a day-to-day basis, but there are still other ways to make your kitchen less attractive to pests.

Go through the items in your cabinets and pantry, discarding those spices and flour that are stale or outdated. Baking ingredients attract pantry pests like beetles, meal moths and ants. Wipe down the inside of the cabinets and the pantries, cleaning out all the fallen crumbs and dust. If possible, move appliances away from the walls and vacuum behind them. You’d be surprised how much dirt and crumbs are behind them! Let’s not forget to give the counters and floors a good scrub-down!

They’re everywhere!

Your kitchen isn’t the only place you’ll find pests. The bathroom holds a lot of moisture and some pests, like cockroaches and silverfish, are attracted to moisture. The best way to prevent these pests is to eliminate the sources of water within the bathroom. Check under the sink and around the tub and toilet to ensure there are no leaky pipes or faucets causing moisture issues. Luckily, this pest can only survive a week without water, so let’s keep the moisture away!

Don’t forget the rodents and spiders hiding in the basement. Clutter and darkness are what keep these guys attracted to your home. Go through the boxes and storage you have and try to eliminate the clutter. Use plastic bins with a secure lid as this keeps rodents and insects from getting inside. Be sure to seal any cracks or crevices with silicone-based caulk to prevent pests from entering your home.
